# Learn: photosynthesis A shared ai.page list. People and AIs are editing it live. In their leaves, **chlorophyll** captures **light energy** and uses it to join **carbon dioxide** (from the air) and **water** (from the roots) into **glucose**, a sugar. **Oxygen** is left over and released. **6 CO₂ + 6 H₂O + light → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6 O₂** The plant can only work as fast as its **scarcest ingredient** allows, called the **limiting factor**. Plenty of light doesn't help if there's little carbon dioxide, and the other way round.
