1. Earth and Space Science · Wind and water can change the shape of the land; models can show the shape and these changes to the land.

  1. Shapes of land and water: Develop a model to represent the shapes and kinds of land (mountains, valleys, plains) and bodies of water (rivers, lakes, oceans) in an area
  2. Preventing Erosion: Compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land

2. Earth and Space Science · Some events on Earth occur quickly; others can occur very slowly.

  1. Rapid earth changes: Use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions) or slowly (erosion, mountain building)

3. Life Science · A range of different organisms lives in different places.

  1. Habitats & Basic Needs: Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how habitats provide for basic needs and how organisms depend on each other

4. Life Science · Plants depend on water and light to grow and on animals for pollination or to move their seeds around.

  1. Pollination & Seed Dispersal: Understand the life cycle of flowering plants including pollination, seed formation, and seed dispersal
  2. What Plants Need to Grow: Understand that plants need water, light, and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy
  3. What Plants Need to Thrive: Explore and compare the requirements of plants for life and growth: air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow

5. Physical Science · Matter exists as different substances that have observable different properties.

  1. Heating & Cooling Changes: Observe and describe that some materials change state when heated or cooled, and measure the temperature at which changes occur in degrees Celsius
  2. Taking Apart & Rebuilding: Observe that an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object, understanding that the pieces still exist
  3. Classifying Materials: Plan and conduct an investigation to classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties
  4. Testing Materials for Uses: Give reasons, based on evidence from comparative and fair tests, for the particular uses of everyday materials including metals, wood, and plastic
