Part of: [Mississippi: Science](https://ai.page/roadmap/ms-sci.md)

Goal: Mississippi academic standards: Science, Grade 2

## 1. Earth and Space Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of how humans use Earth's resources.

- [Preventing Erosion](https://ai.page/c/preventing-erosion/index.md): Compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land
- [Rapid earth changes](https://ai.page/c/rapid-earth-changes/index.md): Use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions) or slowly (erosion, mountain building)
- [Earth Is Made of Rock](https://ai.page/c/earth-is-made-of-rock/index.md): Understand that Earth is made of rock and other solid materials
- [Natural resources](https://ai.page/c/natural-resources/index.md): Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and that their uses affect the environment
- [Rocks and soil](https://ai.page/c/rocks-and-soil/index.md): Recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter, and that different soils have different properties

## 2. Earth and Space Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of the appearance, movements, and patterns of the sun, moon, and stars.

- [Sun, Moon, and stars](https://ai.page/c/sun-moon-and-stars-science/index.md): Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe predictable patterns such as the sun rising and setting, the moon changing shape, and stars appearing at night
- [Sun, Moon & Stars](https://ai.page/c/sun-moon-and-stars/index.md): Identify the Sun, Moon, and stars as objects in the sky and describe basic differences: the Sun gives light and heat during the day, stars are tiny points of light at night, and the Moon can appear in both the day and night sky
- [The Sun is a star](https://ai.page/c/the-sun-is-a-star/index.md): Know that the Sun is a star — the closest star to Earth — and that it is at the centre of our solar system, with all eight planets orbiting around it

## 3. Physical Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of how the motion of objects is affected by pushes, pulls, and friction on an object.

- [Pushes & Pulls](https://ai.page/c/pushes-and-pulls/index.md): Understand that pushes and pulls are forces that can change the speed or direction of an object's motion, and compare the effects of different strengths and directions
- [Friction & Surfaces](https://ai.page/c/friction-and-surfaces/index.md): Compare how things move on different surfaces, noticing that some surfaces create more friction than others

## 4. Physical Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of matter.

- [States of Matter Vocabulary](https://ai.page/c/states-of-matter-vocabulary/index.md): Name and distinguish the three states of matter — solid, liquid, and gas — using properties vocabulary: hard, rigid, runny, flows, keeps its shape, fills its container; use 'change of state' to describe what happens when materials are heated or cooled
- [Heating & Cooling Changes](https://ai.page/c/heating-and-cooling-changes/index.md): Observe and describe that some materials change state when heated or cooled, and measure the temperature at which changes occur in degrees Celsius
- [Testing Materials for Uses](https://ai.page/c/testing-materials-for-uses/index.md): Give reasons, based on evidence from comparative and fair tests, for the particular uses of everyday materials including metals, wood, and plastic
- [Classifying Materials](https://ai.page/c/classifying-materials/index.md): Plan and conduct an investigation to classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties
- [Solids, Liquids & Gases](https://ai.page/c/solids-liquids-and-gases/index.md): Compare and group materials as solids, liquids, or gases based on their observable properties and behaviour

## 5. Life Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of internal and external structures in plants and animals and how they relate to their growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction within an

- [How animals adapt to environments](https://ai.page/c/how-animals-adapt-to-environments/index.md): Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment and understand that adaptation may lead to evolution over time
- [Structures for Survival](https://ai.page/c/structures-for-survival/index.md): Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behaviour, and reproduction

## 6. Life Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of the interdependence of living things.

- [Habitats & Basic Needs](https://ai.page/c/habitats-and-basic-needs/index.md): Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited and describe how habitats provide for basic needs and how organisms depend on each other

## 7. Life Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of the interdependence of living things and the environment in which they live.

- [Changing Environments](https://ai.page/c/changing-environments/index.md): Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers and challenges to living things

## 8. Life Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of how living things change in form as they go through the general stages of a life cycle.

- [Life Cycles of Organisms](https://ai.page/c/life-cycles-of-organisms/index.md): Develop models to describe that organisms have unique and diverse life cycles but all share the common stages of birth, growth, reproduction, and death

## 9. Life Science · Students will demonstrate an understanding of the classification of animals based on physical characteristics.

- [Animal Body Groups](https://ai.page/c/animal-body-groups/index.md): Describe and compare the external body structure of common animals across groups (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals)
- [Animal Classification Vocabulary](https://ai.page/c/animal-classification-vocabulary/index.md): Use vocabulary for classifying animals and describing life cycles — vertebrate, invertebrate, mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, insect, arachnid, larva, pupa, metamorphosis, gestation, offspring, complete metamorphosis, incomplete metamorphosis — and apply these correctly when sorting and comparing organisms
- [Classifying Ocean Animals](https://ai.page/c/classifying-ocean-animals/index.md): Classify ocean animals into major groups: fish (breathe through gills, have scales), marine mammals (breathe air, warm-blooded, feed milk), and invertebrates (no backbone — jellyfish, octopuses, crabs, starfish)
