How to learn Year 3: Mathematics

Australian Curriculum (ACARA): Mathematics, Year 3

0 of 16 concepts ready to learn · Markdown, for your AI

1. Number and Algebra

  1. Sorting Data into Categories: Organise and represent data with up to three categories by counting objects in each category and sorting categories by quantity
  2. Sorting into categories (age 6+): Interpret categorical data by asking and answering questions about totals, how many in each category, and how many more or less one category has than another
  3. Simple Chance Experiments: Conduct simple probability experiments — flipping a coin, rolling a die, pulling coloured counters from a bag — record results, and compare experimental outcomes with expected theoretical outcomes
  4. Understanding angles: Recognise angles as a property of shape or a description of a turn
  5. Telling time to the minute (age 9+): Solve problems involving converting between units of time (hours↔minutes, minutes↔seconds, years↔months, weeks↔days)
  6. Calculating with measurements: Measure, compare, add, and subtract lengths (m/cm/mm), mass (kg/g), and volume/capacity (l/ml) using standard units
  7. Shape patterns: Generate a number or shape pattern that follows a given rule; identify apparent features of the pattern not explicit in the rule and explain informally why they occur
  8. Giving Change: Add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p in practical contexts
  9. Fractions of a whole: Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a/b as a parts of size 1/b
  10. Choosing mathematical tools: Select and use appropriate tools and representations strategically: choose between mental, written, and diagrammatic methods; use calculators for checking; select fraction models suited to the task
  11. Times tables (age 7+): Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4, and 8 multiplication tables
  12. All times tables to 12×12: Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12
  13. Adding and subtracting (age 7+): Add and subtract numbers with up to three digits using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction
  14. Place Value Problem-Solving: Solve number and practical problems involving place value with increasingly large positive numbers
  15. Place Value to 1000: Solve number problems and practical problems involving place value of numbers up to 1000
  16. Odd and even numbers: Recognise odd and even numbers
